Take stock

The sheet for station one, and it is free. Written alone first, then shown to the two or three people who have watched you decide. Twenty minutes.

First: what we already have

The documentWritten inLast openedThe last decision it changed (blank means declared, not tested)
Our values
Our mission
Our plan
Anything else on a wall

A document is suspect; a habit is the goal. A blank in the last column is an honest line, not a failure. It says the page has not been tested yet.

Then: what we are here for

The problem we solve for a customer, in one sentence
Not what you sell. If the sentence names your product or your area, try again. Say what the customer was stuck with, and what changes for them.
Who has that problem
What it costs them when it is not solved
Why they pick us, in a customer’s own words
Ask three customers and write what they said, not what you hoped. “You’re the cheapest” is not a reason to stay. “You answer the phone at six in the morning” is.
Judge this page by how many decisions it changes, not by how well it reads. If nothing on it has changed a decision in a year, take it off the wall and start again with the one sentence above.

The rest of The Direction Page

Three more blocks and the quarter check. They belong to the reads inside Base Camp.

The sheet above belongs to the read that is free, so it is free too. Inside Base Camp, Direction is four stations in order, and each one fills a block of one page:

  1. Take stock — Block 1: the sheet above, on the page.
  2. Name the core — Block 2: one line per value, and beside it the dated decision where that value cost you the more expensive option.
  3. Choose what to count — Block 3: the one number you grow — the unit, where you are today, the range, the year.
  4. Know how to say no — Block 4: never, yes-if, not yet, and what you price on.

Behind the page: this quarter’s one thing, the quarter check, and the table pages where the team throws everything on the table before you settle it.
